Dental Implants Q & A

What are the benefits of implants?

Dental implants have a success rate of 98% and can last a lifetime if you care for them well. They offer several advantages over traditional dentures or bridges and look and feel like your natural teeth, so they don’t affect the way you eat or speak as dentures do. Other benefits include:

  • Natural-looking
  • Don’t need to be removed
  • Long-lasting
  • Don’t compromise neighboring teeth

Who is a candidate for an implant?

If you’re healthy enough for dental work, particularly oral surgery, you may be a candidate for an implant. Dr. Katz considers your gum health and bone availability as these structures must be strong enough to hold the implant.

You must also demonstrate a willingness to maintain excellent oral hygiene habits once you have the implant.

What is the process of getting an implant?

Getting a dental implant is a multi-step process. Dr. Katz develops a clear treatment plan for you according to your needs. In most cases, you first receive the actual implant in a minor outpatient surgical procedure. The implant is a small titanium post inserted into the jaw bone.

After about 6-12 weeks, the bone has grown around the implant to create a solid “root” for a false tooth. Dr. Katz then attaches an abutment to the implant. He attaches a custom-made crown that feels and looks just like your natural teeth to the abutment.

How can implants be used for dentures?

If you have a series of missing teeth, implants may also be an option to hold dentures in place. They hold the dentures in your mouth so that you don’t have to deal with the slippage and unnatural look of removable dentures. The dentures snap onto attachments placed on the implants so you can remove it as necessary.

You do need to remove implant-supported dentures daily for cleaning and sleeping. The implant-supported dentures may be an alternative to bridges or multiple crowns. Talk to Dr. Katz to see if this might be a viable option for you.
