Emergency Care Q & A

What is a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies are those instances that just can’t wait for a future appointment. You know you need to see a doctor soon to alleviate pain, prevent further damage, or repair your smile. Emergency cases include:

  • Severe tooth pain
  • Broken, cracked, or loose teeth
  • Lost or dislodged crowns
  • Broken fillings
  • Swelling of the soft tissue of your gums or cheeks
  • Knocked out teeth

What if I’m not sure my issue is an “emergency?”

Call the office -- even if it’s not during regular business hours. Emerson Dental Arts offers 24/7 phone and text availability, so the staff on call can help you determine what steps you should take and if you need emergency care. If you do, the office provides early morning, evening, and Saturday hours to help accommodate you.

A few same-day appointments are also reserved for emergency cases.

What should I do if I knock out my tooth?

If you’ve experienced trauma or an accident that’s caused you to lose your tooth, don’t panic. Gently brush off any dirt on the tooth and keep the root intact if possible. Try holding it in the socket until you can get to the office.

If that isn’t possible, hold the tooth between your cheek and gums, or preserve it in a bit of milk as you wait for treatment. The sooner you can see Dr. Katz, the better.

What should I do if I crack a tooth?

Call the office and make an appointment for as soon as possible. In the meantime, rinse your mouth with warm water and apply cold compresses to your face at the site of your tooth to minimize swelling.

How can I prevent dental emergencies?

Accidents happen, but good oral hygiene can help ward off infections in your gums and teeth. Floss and brush regularly and see Emerson Dental Arts for checkups at least two times a year.

If you participate in sports, wear a mouthguard to protect your teeth and to prevent yourself from biting your cheeks or tongue. Try not to chew ice, popcorn kernels, or very hard candy as they can damage your natural teeth and dental work. Always use the appropriate tools and not your teeth for cutting or opening objects.

Emerson Dental Arts provides Emergency Dentist services in Emerson, NJ and surrounding areas. Please feel free to call our office or request an appointment online today.
