Laser Gum Treatment Q & A

What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a severe condition when an infection in your gum tissue spreads to your teeth and causes decay, potential tooth loss, bone loss, and even heart disease.

Periodontal disease starts out as gingivitis, or gum inflammation, caused by plaque, which collects on your teeth and attracts bacteria. When untreated, gingivitis may progress to full-blown gum disease.

How does laser therapy treat periodontal disease?

Traditional treatment for periodontal disease consists of scaling and root planing. That involves using dental instruments to scrape away tartar and plaque from the gum line and around the root so bacteria doesn’t spread and healthy gum tissue can regenerate.

The treatment can be harsh and cause bleeding, pain, and swelling. In severe cases of gum disease, you may need surgery.

Laser treatment is an alternative to these traditional methods. Dr. Katz uses the dental laser to access and remove infected gum tissue from around the tooth root. It emits light energy that destroys bacteria and removes the plaque and calculus. The laser also stimulates the rejuvenation of healthy tissue.

What are the benefits of laser therapy in treating gum disease?

Using a laser eliminates the need for you to go under general anesthesia, which is often the case during traditional gum surgery. Other benefits of laser treatment include:

  • More precision in targeting diseased tissue
  • Less or no bleeding and swelling
  • Quieter and cause less anxiety than ultrasonic instruments and drills
  • Effectively targets bacteria in gum pockets, not just at the gum line
  • Shorter recovery times
  • Leaves surrounding healthy tissue unaffected

How do lasers help with bleeding and swollen gums?

Bleeding and swollen gums are the first signs of gum disease. Laser treatment helps eradicate the bacteria and provides a deep cleaning so that these symptoms subside. Then, with improved hygiene habits like twice-daily brushing and flossing and frequent professional cleanings, you can keep the gum disease at bay.
